Subject: A Very Dangerous Crossing

I wish to bring to your attention the problem of the very dangerous crossing at the corner of Veterans Parkway and Victory Drive. The problem stems from the lack of parking spaces that are supposed to support to the Columbus Civic Center and South Common Sports Complex. The center seats 10.000 people but, there are only 3041 parking spaces. That is shared between the civic center the sports complex and, AJ. Mc Clung stadium. When any two of these three individual entities attempt to facilitate an event simultaneously. There simply are not enough places to park the cars.

This has resulted in students parking as far away as the Dolly Madison parking lot. To attend the local a high school or college football games. Over the last 3 years the situation has only gotten worse. Because when the Chattahoochee Valley Fair comes to town it monopolizes 1/3 of the parking lot. Citizens have no alternative but, park across the street, it is often dark and hard for them to see or be seen, as they dart across highway 280 east. Running for their lives in what can only be described as a death trap. This small strip of highway has claimed the lives of four human beings over the last 3 years.

This is a big problem that could be rectified by some small measures being put in place. The block directly across the street from the civic center that was formally Booker T Washington Apartments but is now just an eyesore. Make it a parking lot, it is already wired for lighting and could provide another 600-1000 parking spaces. More important is the need for a pedestrian overpass that would allow people in wheel chairs and with other disabilities safe access to cross the street.

I on behalf of the students and parents of Columbus I appeal to you to look into the matter and

Thanking you,

Yours truly,
