Expanded thinking piece

The Bacon’s rebellion is a very important rebellion in history. This is because it was among the earliest form of rebellion and revolution in history. The Bacon’s rebellion was an armed rebellion that occurred in 1676. The Virginia settlers who were mostly farmers in the area did the rebellion. Nathaniel Bacon led the rebellion against the governor of the are at the time who was called William Berkeley. Bacon was against William’s leadership. The story is a confusing one as it is impossible to know who among the two of them is the good one since both of them have their positive and negative attributes.

Virginia had just shifted from indentured servants who were white to African slaves as the main source of labour in the plantation farms. This accelerated the start of the rebellion as the Africans did not want to do a lot of work and receive little or no payment. Had this happened today, it would have been considered to be a violation of human rights. All humans are the same and no one deserved to be treated better than other people regardless of their social status. I strongly support the rebellion since the people who were rebelling wanted to air out their grievances and rioting was the only solution that they had as the leadership was not willing to listen to them when they did it peacefully.

Sir William was seen not to care about the rights of the people. This was his negative attribute. He was seen to reward those who were around him or those who were his friends. This was not good as he would often give out land that belonged to other people. This left most people moving to the frontier or work as tenants in the fields that had been claimed. Voting rights originally belonged to men but were soon shifted to land owners only. This backs my argument showing how Sir William never cared about equality among the people. After sometime, high taxes on tobacco and the falling of its demand causing farmers to have little earnings further frustrated them. This was very paining as the farmers were slowly losing their land and now high taxes were being imposed on them. This led to the start of the rebellion which was led by Bacon.

However, Bacon was also immature since the only reason he decided to help the farmers and slaves fight for their right was so that he could get his revenge on Sir William. Bacon was wealthy but he was not in the inner circle of the governor. Furthermore, he wanted to be granted the right of attacking the native americans at will since they were attacking Bacon and his people. The governor refused and this saw Bacon lead the rebellion against the leadership of Sir William. I said that he was immature since he had everything but started rioting just because he did not get want he wanted. This means that he would not have led the revolution if the governor granted him what he wanted.Later, Bacon got into leadership but died after a while. Sir William who had been overthrown came back and took over the leadership of the area again. He then proceeded to kill 23 people who were supporters of Bacon. This was bad as the rioters were only fighting for their rights. However, the fact that they had burned down an entire village was bad and they were not supposed to do so. Killing them was also not the way to go as other punishments such as detaining them would have worked too.

The illustrations above show how people in power can misuse their power and make the people being ruled suffer. This should not be the case. Leaders should strive to treat everyone fairly and equally since we are all equal. The  significance of my argument is that it shows that all people should enjoy the same rights without any discrimination. Had the leadership of Sir William been fair, the rebellion could have not occurred and no one would have suffered. That is why I have emphasized on equality throughout the paper
